Fall by far is my favorite season, and along with fall comes Halloween. Growing up, my family members weren’t the biggest fanatics about this holiday. I mean we did go trick or treating a few times, and even dressed up in cute little costumes, but it wasn’t anywhere near the highlight of my year. Last Halloween Jake and I carved our first pumpkin. If you have never done it before, don’t be fooled; it might look easy, but it is quite a difficult task. Maybe it’s just the perfectionist side of me that wants it to be just how I imaged.

This year I thought I might try my hand at carving something again. But then I came across these beautiful pictures and thought this was a little more my style.

It sounds like the perfect weekend project. Since this is the last weekend before Halloween maybe I can squeeze it in among my many other projects I have planed. I bet if I told Jake he could paint Mario or a peppermint (his favorite band is the White Stripes) on his, he would even join me.

5 Reasons Why We’re Excited…

Jake Blog Post 914 Views

…about our new Coffeemaker.

  1. Delayed brew. No more getting out of bed twice before drinking coffee.
  2. Permanent filter. No more buying and throwing away disposable filters.
  3. Strong brew. It can optionally make a more flavorful cuppa joe.
  4. Self cleaning. Add vinegar, press a button, and violà – it’s clean!
  5. It’s bigger, and cooler looking, than our old coffee maker.
Mornings just might not be so painful. But not likely.

The Michigander In Us

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Letterpress, Michigan 1359 Views

Last week Jake and I got to go back to Traverse City, Michigan for some friends of ours wedding. Both of us were really looking forward to seeing family, friends and getting a taste of that wonderful Michigan Fall; It was a much needed trip. Although Jake still had (or should I say got) to work while we were there, we managed to take some time to do some things we wanted. Being in Michigan was such a change from the big city of Los Angeles. The first night both Jake and I noticed how quiet  and dark it was. Even the stores seemed less busy. Needless to say, it was nice.

We even went down town and scoped out a place for our letterpress shop. We found the perfect place just off of Front Street on the same street that Dad B. works. Maybe it will still be available in 5 years. Oh and I also had my first Pasty.

Overall the wedding was beautiful and we had great time. Congratulations Aaron and Lizz and thanks for letting us be a part of your special day.

Etsy: Fall into Autumn

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post 831 Views

The last two days have been pretty overcast here in LA. With all the sun we usually have, this has been a nice little change. It feels like Fall. From what I hear there isn’t much change in seasons in Southern California, so I’ll take what I can get. Anyway all this cold weather (really its only been in the 60’s) has put me in the mood for Fall things. Here are some of our favorite Fall finds on Etsy.

(from left to right)
1. Red Fox Pup Hat. Dogs need hats too.
2. Professor Nerd In Mustard. If only Professors really looked like this.
3. 1970’s Thermos Picnic Set. Blanket: check. Husband: check. Chicken Noodle soup in a cute thermos: CHECK!
4. Mid Century Light Fixture. The perfect mix of rustic and chic.
5. Deep Red Neckwarmer. Yes, please.
6. Honey Amber Ceramic Mugs. I’ll take some hot chocolate in one of these cute mugs!
7. Monty The Fox. You’re never too old for stuffed animals.
8. Mr. & Mrs. Lopez. I do say.
Needless to say I think we will enjoy going back to Michigan on Sunday for some real Midwest Fall weather.

The Bartlett Press: Part 1

Jake Blog Post Letterpress 1046 Views

I just wanted to quickly give an update regarding Jamie and My’s dream to one day own and operate our very own print shop. Yesterday we purchased our very first Lead Typeface; Vintage 18pt Craw Clarendon.

This typeface was originally designed in England by Robert Besley for the Fann Street Foundry in 1845 and was named after the Clarendon Press in London.

Jamie and I fell in love with this font when we designed our wedding invitations.

(It’s the “Wedding Celebration” typeface)

The type shipped today and should be here by Friday. We are so excited.

It tasted like home.

Yesterday was a particularly good day. Not because any certain thing happened, in fact not much happened at all. I guess it was the little things that made it a good day. Yesterday was one of my days off work, so I sat home with nothing begging to get done. The day started off beautiful, like most days in LA. The sky was blue and the sun was shinning. I started to work on another linocut for our Etsy shop (which we plan on opening mid October). Yes, I do spend my days off from my graphic design job designing. Sometimes getting lost in a design is the most wonderful feeling. Later on that afternoon Jake came home for lunch (which is always the best part of my afternoon). After that I had the most unlikely urge to finally tackle my student loans. My loans are still in their grace period, but for the longest time I had been avoiding getting them all figured out and my name and address changed due to how utterly confusing they are. But as I sit here and type, I am proud to tell you have have defeated the loan beast. By the time I was finished it had already gotten pretty late, so I decided to start making dinner. Earlier that day I had decided I was going to attempt to make my mom’s lasagna recipe. I had been craving it for weeks and finally, I just decided to go for it and that is just what I did. I am proud to say that it turned out just perfect. It tasted like home.

I spent the rest of the evening with Jake and we continued our nightly tradition of watching an episode of the X-files. I think that made for a good day.

Letterpress We Love.

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post 1004 Views

Today Jake and I thought we would share with you some of our favorite letterpress prints. If you don’t already have a love for letterpress I think after this you will.

Jake and I actually bought this print at Hammerpress after visiting the studio a few times on our college’s annual art department trip.
Designer: Hammerpress Kansas City, MO
Why we love it: Hammerpress is one of our favorite letterpress designers. I think it is their excessive use of type ornaments that makes each of their pieces unique and beautiful.
p.s. Jake and I did get to meet the owner, Brady Vest. He seems swell.
Designer: Sycamore Street Press Herber City, UT Why we love it: Their designs are full of detailed illustrations a beautiful bright colors.
Designer: Boxcar Press Syracuse, NY
Why we love it: #1 we like pizza #2 you can’t get that impress on an inkjet. I think that sums it up.
Designer: 1canoe2 Columbia, MO
Why we love it: Its clever, cute and, fun.
Designer: YEE-HAW Knoxville, TN
Why we love it: “Danger ZOMBIES Run.”
Designer: Byvik Ink San Diego, CA
Why we love it: Lots of what looks like simple shapes makes up an intricate design of a partridge in a pear tree
Designer: The Pattern Press Texas
Why we love it: It’s classy
Designer: F2-Design Lubbock, TX
Why we love it: It’s a guitar and a face…tricky!

If you have a favorite we would love to see it. Because if you haven’t noticed, we can’t get enough letterpress.

Dreamer or Planner

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post 942 Views

I have this bad habit of dreaming about things, big or small and how I would like them to be. Its probably kind of childish of me, but I do it anyway. So I thought today I would let you into my little dream world and share with you my, well, dreams.

I dream of owning our own letterpress shop where Jake and I can drink coffee, be inspired, and make art.

We could sleep in til 9 or get up to see the sun rise.

We would have a house with a big front porch and a backyard for our Dalmatian (and don’t worry mom probably a cute little kid or two).

Jake would like to move back to Michigan…maybe we will

I’d love to teach art classes for unprivileged kids.

I would also love to have our worked featured on a website or published in a magazine. Hmm maybe even write our own book.

That’s not too much to ask for, right?

Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning. – Gloria Steinem

I’m not dreaming. I’m planning.
