We Heart Ikea

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post DIY, Kitchen 996 Views

We ending up going to Ikea this weekend to buy a few things to upgrade our kitchen a bit. And thanks to my handyman husband, everything is already hanging up. Here are the results.

The bars, hooks, plants and pots are the new editions to our kitchen. We like it.
*side note: Those cute J and B mugs handing up are Christmas gifts from our friends Jacob and Erika. Believe it or not, but we bought them the exact same ones form Anthropologie with their letters on it. I think we might be friends.

Back Home

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post 1024 Views

Well Jake and I are back home from our lovely Christmas vacation. We went to Colorado to visit my family. While we were there, we ate lots of good food, played with my baby niece (although she is not much of a baby anymore) and got hooked on the tv show, House. It was a much needed break that we took full advantage of.

Now that we are back we are still hooked on House (halfway through season 2), we are eating slightly less as good of food and going to work Monday-Friday. So, how many more days until next Christmas? Just kidding (kind of). It’s always hard to get back into the swing of things after a holiday. I need something creative to do that doesn’t pertain to work. I think I would like to decorate our Kitchen. Right now it is quite bland, just the basics. Everything is stuffed away in drawers or cabinets and you never get to see all the pretty stuff we got for our wedding.

I went searching for decorating inspiration online and found these fabulous pictures:

The first two pictures were found on Seventy Tree

Left: Vintage is the New Black
Right: Design*Sponge

Right: Vintage Home

I concluded I need some open shelves, hooks for hanging, and a few plants. Ikea, I think I might visit you this weekend.

The Bartlett Press: Part 2

Jake Blog Post Letterpress 854 Views

Well it’s official: Jamie and I have started the process of owning our very own Tabletop Letterpress. And what’s even better is that it’s being completely restored for us by Andrew Churchman (a well known expert in the letterpress community). It is also coming with all of the tools and materials we’ll need to start printing.  Here are some pictures of our baby; thank goodness it’s not going to take 9 months!

The finished product will be painted black with red and gold highlights. It weighs close to 200lbs, and should be ready soon after the new year. We’re very excited and can’t wait for it to get delivered.

Day After Thanksgiving

Jake Blog Post Decor, Holiday, Home Video, Video 1194 Views

The day after Thanksgiving, or as we like to call it, the first day of Christmas, was an amazing day for Jamie and I. We avoided the long Black-Friday lines and shopped the deals online from the comfort of our bed. After another Cinnabon, we got up and began to decorate our first Christmas tree. There’s not much I can say with words; instead, we made a short video for everyone to see. Enjoy!

If you can’t see the video, click here to view the video directly.

Like I said, words can’t describe how much fun we had decorating our little apartment. Look out Christmas, here we come!

Our First Thanksgiving

Jake Blog Post 818 Views

This year Jamie and I celebrated our very first Thanksgiving together. It was a lot of fun being able to make the food for ourselves, without worrying about what anyone else would think of it.

After sleeping in a little on Thursday we got up and made our Holiday blend coffee from the Coffee Bean, and stuck our Cinnabon rolls in the oven.

We probably could’ve eaten all five of them if our stomaches were big enough. Afterwards we started to make our Thanksgiving feast of a meal which included a Cornish Hen, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Green Beans, Cranberry Sauce, and Dinner Rolls.
Needless to say, it was a fantastic meal. Jamie and I were able to video chat with both our families later that day, and then went to see a movie with my brother and sister in-law. It was nice being able to have our own little Thanksgiving meal, and still spend time with family. We’re both looking forward to next year already.

Scandinavian Art

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post 850 Views

Recently, without even knowing it, I have become inspired by Scandinavian art. I knew I loved this certain style of art I had been seeing and with a little digging, I discovered that it was Scandinavian. Now I just can’t get enough of it. The designs typically contain dynamic geometric designs, foliage ornaments and often features animals (my favorite part) I searched around and founds some beautiful pieces.

1. My Heart by Bold and Noble
2. Magic Berry Bush by Sanna Annukka
3. Siesta cushion cover by Roddy and Ginger
4. Woodland Tray from Norwegian by Darling Clementine
5. Holiday Dove Card by Sass and Peril
6. Tin by Sanna Annukka

If anyone knows anything about Scandinavian art or knows of any good resources to learn more about it, I would love to know. Just leave a comment after this post.

Recently Jake and I have been utterly obsessed with the TLC show Cake Boss. The first two seasons are watch instantly on Netflix. If you haven’t seen It, we would highly recommend it. Its about a family owned and operated Italian bakery. Their cakes are more like art pieces. Each design is so intricate and beautiful. Tthe family members are always pushing each other’s buttons. However, at the end of the day, you just know that they love each other.

After watching the show, it got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be fun to be a part of a family business? I’ve heard it said “don’t mix family and business”, but I still think it would be fun. Between both our families we have so many tallented people. The possibilities are endless. Now if only we could all live in the same place.

Resurfaced Dining Table

Jake Tutorial DIY 1624 Views

Jamie and I have wanted to refinish our dining room table ever since we got it on craigslist. It was only $30, but there was definitely a reason for that. There was plenty of gunk and stains on the surface, plus the legs were scuffed up. We also have been meaning to hang a lamp above the table instead of sitting a table lamp on top. So we’ve finally gotten around to tackling our little dining room project, and now we can show you how it all went.
The first thing we had to do was strip the surface of the table. It was actually pretty fun, and we got to wear some sweet gear.

Once we finished that, we had to sand and stain the wood. Even after just the sanding, the table looked so much nicer than it was before.

Then we printed out a stencil design, put it on top of rows of painters tape, cut it out with an x-acto knife, taped it to the surface and painted away!

Jamie did a little touch up afterwards. Next, we painted the legs and sides of the tabletop.

As a finishing touch, we added a new ceiling lamp and called it good. After all of our hard work, we sat down at our rustic chic, upcycled dining table, and ate some toy story shaped mac and cheese, and applesauce.

Beautiful Things for Good Things

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post 739 Views

Today I came across this great website that I thought I would share. It is called The Working Proof.  Their mission is to promote art and social responsibility. 15% of each print sold goes to a charity of the artist’s choice. So not only is the art something of aesthetic value, but also of social value. In the end artists have a way to use their talent for something beneficial, Charities are exposed and supported, and people can own beautiful art. I think I’m obsessed or maybe just really inspired. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
