A while back I met Jen on instagram. It’s amazing how many cool people you can meet and connect with on there. She runs the lovely blog From Rain to Shine. It’s stuff like this that amazes me. Each day Lorraine Loots creates a miniature painting that is surprisingly detailed for its size. It’s so inspiring to see artists so dedicated to their work and loving what they do. The 365 days ended in December, but Lorraine didn’t have the heart to stop, and why should she? These are just amazing.

I’ve got a lot of things on my mind this week, so I’ve been trying to think through them all. Things like: our blog, our shop, what I should have for lunch. You know, the important stuff. I’ll let you know if I come up with anything revolutionary.
I spent most of my life in Michigan and Colorado. That makes me pretty used to the cold right? WRONG. That’s what everyone seems to think and are surprised when I’m complaining I’m cold in weather I guess I’m not supposed to be cold in. But it’s not California that has made me soft. I’ve always been this way. So while the rest of the country is literally freezing, I just feel like I am.
Sometimes I bake cookies just so the oven will heat up the apartment.
Sometimes I blowdry my already dry hair and the rest of my body to warm up.
Sometimes I heat up a mug of water so I have something warm to hold.
Sometimes I drink that water.
Sometimes I use the laptop instead of my desktop so I have something warm on my lap and it’s an extra good day when the fans turn on because the computer is overheating.
Sometimes I turn on the heating pad and keep it on my legs while I work all day.
Sometimes I cuddly with my pup so I can steal his heat.
You do what you got to do.
I hope everybody is staying warm! But hey if you find yourself chilled, go heat up a mug of water. It works and that’s all that matters.
I recently discovered a new to me hand lettering artist, Sean Tulgetske, and I just can’t get enough of his work. He is a Michigander transplanted in Southern California so what’s not to like about him? The photography he pairs with his lettering is pretty killer too. Yesterday a design friend from college posted this on his facebook. It looked cool so I clicked on it thinking it was going to be some well designed infographic. Oh no no. It’s so much more than that. I can’t even explain it. You just have to see it for yourself. Check out Flat Design vs. Realism here.
I love Jake. He really is the best husband I could ever ask for. Besides just being so stinkin’ cute, he is the most loving selfless person and he always wants to make my life easier.
Wacom has had their Cintiq tablets that let you draw right on the screen for a while now. I was never really able to get used to their other non-display tablets; it was just way too unnatural for me. So Jake bought the Cintiq for me over a year ago and I loved it and couldn’t be more thankful for it. There were a few down sides to it that annoyed me, but really was no getting around them at the time. Well, Jake being Jake always tries to make my life a little easier. So about a month ago he started looking into a better option for a graphics tablet. That’s when he found the Microsoft Surface Pro 2. When he first mentioned the word Microsoft I’ll be honest, I pretty much stopped listening. I haven’t used a non-Apple computer in YEARS! Plus I was a little hesitant to leave behind Wacom which is the standard for graphics tablets. But Jake kept pushing the idea and reading all these reviews to me. So I tried instead to look at the product for what it was and not who made it. Jake talked me into at least going to the store and playing around with it to see how it worked. The whole time I was there I felt like I was cheating on Apple. But then again Apple didn’t even make the kind of product we were looking for.
So there we were playing on the Surface Pro 2 — and I actually liked it. I’m not the person who likes to spend money, especially on big purchases like a computer, so It took a little more convincing for me. We decided that we would sell our Cintiq and Bamboo Wacom tablets and use that money for the Surface. That made me feel a little better so I finally agreed. Jake found a good deal for one on eBay and we bought it.
The weather here has been teasing me lately. It’s been feeling like summer but I know we are still months away. We’re missing longer days, dinners made on the grill, lazy days on the beach and weekend road trips.
Maybe a drive down the PCH with the windows open while jamming out to Lorde will hold me over until the real summer comes.
