Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone! Jake and I were suposed to leave for home last night but the snow finally decided to drop in for a visit. Our flight was canceled and now it doesn’t look like we will be headed back to LA until Thursday. Thankfully, we both can work remotely. A few extra vacation days never hurt anyone, right?
Did you make any resolutions for this year? Usually I do, but this year I thought instead of choosing to commit to one or two things all year long, I would just make a list of things I would like to accompish or try this year. Oh and speaking of lists… How did everyone do on their 12 before 2012 list? I would love to hear. I owe you and update on mine. I’ll try to post that later this week. For our new list, here is what we came up with.
1. Try gouache painting

2. Design a wedding collection
3. Consolidate our identity for A Pair of Pears
4. Make a vacuum form for a Storm Trooper suit (Jake).
5. Write and Illustrate a children’s book.

That’s all we have right now. I think that’s a good start.

Fireplaces

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Decor, Home, Inspiration 1735 Views

Even though we haven’t had much snow up here in Michigan, it has been quite cold. Thankfully Jake’s parents have a big fireplace. It has been so nice to cuddle up by the fireplace in the evenings and listen to the crackly fire. You can’t get much better than that on a cold winter night. Fireplaces sure know how to make a house seem more like a home. I’m even a fan of these faux fireplaces. They don’t give off the cozy heat, but they sure do add to the decor!

Snow Day

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Holiday, Snow, Traverse City, Vacation, Winter 1627 Views

One of my favorite things as a kid was when my mom would come in my room early in the morning while I was still asleep and whisper “it’s a snow day. School is canceled”. That’s the best news any kid could hear. Not only do you not have to sit in class all day, but there is plenty of snow outside to play in.
Up here in Traverse City there has been an unusually small amount of snow. The ground hasn’t been completely covered yet, but we have managed to play in what we have had a little. Today we are spending our day relaxing, playing games, and sipping hot cocoa while wrapped in blankets (lots of blankets). We’ll probably end up watching our favorite disney movie, 101 Dalmatians. I’d say that makes for a pretty good snow day. What do you like to do on a snow day?

Jamie and I are huge fans of A Charlie Brown Christmas, and wanted to design a poster inspired by it. We came up with this design, and had a lot of fun making it. And being the ambitious typographic animator that I am, I decided at the last minute that I wanted to animate it. I hope you enjoyed it!

We wish you a very merry Christmas, and hope you all enjoy spending time with your family and friends as we celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Christmas Wishes 2011

Jake Blog Post Christmas, Design, Graphic Design, Letterpress, Printmaking 1566 Views

We are so excited to be able to say that we printed our Christmas cards this year on our letterpress! It was the first time we printed with white ink, and the first time we printed on kraft paper. We couldn’t be more satisfied with the way they came out. The photo was taken by us in front of our Christmas tree, and added to the back of the card using photo corners. We always love designing and putting together things for our own projects. It’s so nice having someone with such similar interests always with you to share special times like these.
We wish you a very merry Christmas! And if you haven’t seen it already, be sure to check out last year’s Christmas card.

A Handmade Christmas Tree

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Christmas, DIY, Holiday, Inspiration 1093 Views

We got an email over the weekend from a fellow blogger, Elle from Holdfast, who wanted to share with us her handmade Christmas tree. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to share it with you. I love her choice of painting it white and the simplicity of ornaments. It’s definitely far from being a traditional tree, but as Elle said, “This year it’s all about cutting back on materialistic products and expectations. Christmas is about enjoying family and friends company and I believe my tree still gives without all the accessories.” I think that just about sums it up. Watch out Carlie Brown; there’s a new Christmas tree in town!

Christmas Kraft Paper

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Christmas, DIY, Holiday 1519 Views

At the beginning of the holiday season I did a post on gift wrapping with kraft paper. If you missed it you can check it out here. Here are some other ideas on how to use kraft paper all throughout your holiday decorating. I guess I should’ve bought a jumbo roll!

TREE BACKDROP: This would be cute for any Christmas party or just to add some Christmas cheer in other rooms of the house. I could see this idea in a playroom for kids to color on all throughout the holiday season.
STOCKING: Fill with Christmas candy to top off your gifts.
TABLE: A perfect way to decorate the kids table. Give them some crayons and let them go crazy with coloring. You could also use a kraft paper as a runner for the adult table and write everyone’s name on it write above their plate.
WREATH: Add a bright red bow and you’ve got yourself a Christmas wreath.

We made it to Michigan! We woke up this morning and it was lightly snowing. So far there is just a light dusting, but I have high hopes. Posts on our blog might be a little sparse the rest of the year, but we will do our best to keep updating. Enjoy your weekend!

O' Christmas Tree

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Christmas, Decor, Decorations 2164 Views

Jake and I already decided that when we are looking for a house we want it to have a nice big window up front where we can put our Christmas tree. It’s quite the welcome when you’re greeted by your Christmas tree as soon as you come home.

I alway enjoy going to other people’s homes during the holidays to see how they decorate their tree. They come in all different shapes, sizes and even colors. My favorite are the trees filled with handmade ornaments and old pictures. It really makes the holidays special when you can reflect on all the fond memories from years past. I look forward to filling our tree with cute hand crafted ornaments made by our future children.
