Photo of the Week: Goodbye Pillow

Ever since I can remember I’ve had a thing for pillows. No, not the kind of “thing” where you like big puffy pillows by the dozen. I prefer a lack of pillow to be honest. I love them flat and cold. When I was younger I would dream of sticking my pillow in the freezer, but every time I was tempted, I’d remember my mom probably wouldn’t appreciate finding a pillow in the freezer, so I just suppressed the urge. I’ve had that same flat pillow my entire life. Buying a new one was out of the question, they are all way to puffy.

After we got married Jake bought a new pillow. Jake was going to get me one too, but I of course refused saying it wasn’t flat enough. After a few month of good use, I started to find a liking for his pillow and would sometimes secretly switch with him…shhh. I finally caved and decided to get a new pillow partly because it bothered me that our pillows didn’t match. So I bought the same pillow Jake had; or more accurately I bought Jake a new pillow and took his much better pillow that was flater due to a few months of use.

It was a big step in my life, leaving something from my childhood behind. However, I just couldn’t throw it away. Right now it sleeps in the closet awaiting the day for me to lay my head on it once again.

Creativity Doesn’t Sleep

These words are all too familiar. You know how they says girls never stop thinking? Well that definitely rings true to me. In my case I’m am constantly thinking about design. Mostly, projects I’m working on. I know that sounds silly, but it’s true. I can’t seem to turn it off. Jake is off in a blissful sleep as soon as his head hits the pillow but I lay in bed for a good 30 minutes thinking “how could I make that logo better” or “what imagery would work for that”. Don’t get me wrong, I love living the creative life. I guess it’s the one time during the day when I’m quite and can really think. Sleep will just have to wait.

The Face of Type “B”

It’s August, my favorite month. Can you guess why? It’s my birthday month! This month for “Face of Type” we chose Bureau Grotesque. It is a wonderful, more condensed, san serif font perfect for display.
Font Fun Fact: Bureau Grotesque is one of the fonts we use for A Pear of Pears’ Identity. Notice the word “Pears” in our blog’s header. Yep, that’s good ol’ Bureau Grotesque.

Below are links to download images based on your screen’s resolution. If your resolution isn’t available just leave a comment with your desired resolution and we would be happy to add another size to our list.

Morning Brew: Think

This poster wonderfully illustrates it’s message with only the use of type. It’s such a simple solution for this piece. So simple in fact, it’s brilliant. Today make an effort to go beyond the obvious. It makes like a little more interesting. Wouldn’t you say?

To “think outside the box” is to look further and try to not think of the obvious things, but to think beyond them. Normally, this advice belongs to creative people. However, this poster is an attempt to make everyone think this way.

Morning Brew: It’s Still Summer

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Morning Brew, Photography 918 Views

One thing I love about summer is being able to do so much outside. Cookouts, beaches, all that good stuff. For me it seems like summer just started, but we went to Target the other day and they were already advertising back to school supplies. I guess it’s hard to gauge seasons when you don’t go to school anymore. It all just seems to flow together now. One good thing that came of all this though, was Target was getting rid of all their lawn games. They were on clearance for $5! I love yard games and I love deals. We already bought ladder ball at the beginning of the summer, but now we have added croquet, bocce and horse shoes to our collection. I think summer is here to stay for a while longer regardless of what Target says. Enjoy the last couple weeks of summer!

Boy oh boy, don’t these look comfy? I’d say they’d be perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. I can just see it now, me, a cup of tea and a good book relaxing on one of these cushions. Best of all, they are fair trade. Women from Napal hand knit these with wool from New Zealand and they then are filled with recycled materials collected from The Netherlands.

Photo of the Week: Carstache

Jake Blog Post Photo of the Week, Photography 1119 Views

Last Christmas I received an amazing present from my great friends Jake and Erika. It’s called the Carstache, and is exactly what it sounds like; a giant plush moustache for your car. I’ve never gotten the courage to actually drive around with it on, so I had to set up a sweet photo for it to show it off. I think it fits perfectly.
And just a nerdy side note: this photo is actually an HDR photo, created by combining four separate exposures into one!

Morning Brew: Succulents

As much as I hate to admit this, I believe my little herb garden is officially dead. I tried my best and I thought I was doing really well, but I lost the poor things. I’m really disappointed. I really like have plants around the apartment. It adds a nice lively touch. I think I’m going to replace the herbs with some Succulents. There are so many beautiful types. It would make for a nice window garden. And since they are drought resistant I think I’ll have a better chance keeping them alive, right?
