Yep you read right. We are throwing Pixel a party for his first birthday! His birthday isn’t for another two months but it’s time to start planning.

I’ve been looking for an excuse to put together another moodboard since I had so much fun doing the last one. Pixel’s party was the perfect opportunity. This one was really fun. Bright colors and cute details are a perfect way to celebrate our little guy’s playful personality.

Weekend Review: Puppy Birthday Party

Jake Blog Post Dogs, Party, Pixel, Weekend 1571 Views

This weekend Jamie and I had two birthday parties to attend. The first party was for our friend Holly. We spent the afternoon in the park playing frisbee, a great game of kickball, and having lunch and birthday cake. Unfortunately I was having so much fun I forgot to snap any photos.
On Sunday we had another birthday party, this time for a friend’s dog; Riggs! Pixel had a blast playing with all the other dogs in the park for the afternoon. There were more dogs there than what I photographed, but some were a little too squirmy for pictures.

Pixel was so worn out that he laid on our shoulders the whole drive home. It was a great day.

Finders Keepers: California Flag

Hand made from St8 of Design
I think a California flag would make a nice addition to our home decor. In our office maybe? That is if we ever get that place organized. Do you ever have those projects that just never seem to end? I’m quickly realizing that that is how our home office is – never ending.
Here are a few more finds from this week:

Wood paneling never looked so good.
Instagram and Dogs are better together.
Call me a hippy, but yes I’m a doing this with my hair.
I need a reason to make this.

In Motion: Husbands “Dream” Music Video

Jake Blog Post Creative, In Motion, Typography, Video 1245 Views

I’ve really been enjoying posting videos lately, so Jamie and I have decided that I’ll be doing it on a weekly basis now. We’ll be calling my column “In Motion”, and each week I’ll have a new video for your viewing pleasure. This week I’ve got another amazing work of typography; graphic designer and photographer duo Cauboyz have created an amazing music video for the group “Husbands”. I made it about two thirds of the way through the video before realizing that everything I was seeing was real — not digitally created. You’ve just got to see it.

The team not only cut out most of the light installations by hand, but they also turned the lights on and off by hand while recording the video. The whole thing is shot in one take and has no edits. It’s really unbelievable how well it turned out. To see the scale of the whole installation and a little bit of  how it was made, check out the behind the scenes video below.

The Slow Down Project

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Inspiration, The Slow Down Project 1046 Views

Last week we challenged you to take a little time and slow down. We called it The Slow Down Project.  This is something Jake and I really value and have been trying to become more intentional about in our own lives. To help us stay accountable (because let’s face it remembering to take a break every so often can be challenging) we asked you to post pictures on Instagram of what you were doing and tag them with #theslowdownproject. We were so excited to see that a few people took up the challenge and slowed down with us! Some people enjoyed their lunch outside, had tea with friends, went on walks and even took the time to play with make-up. Isn’t that awesome?

Jake and I longboarded with Pixel down to the Coffee Bean Saturday for our morning coffee sat outside to enjoy the sun. It was so refreshing.

We would really like to continue this project, and see more people take some time to breathe. For now let’s keep posting pictures and sharing them with the tag #theslowdownproject for everyone to see.

We’re trying to think of ways to expand this project. Not sure what that would look like yet. If you have any thoughts or ideas on the project feel free to leave a comment and brain storm with us!

Finders Keepers: Be Free, Lance

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Finders Keepers, Graphic Design 1065 Views

This week’s Finders Keepers is more like a gold mine then just a find. Breanna Rose has a column on her blog called Be Free, Lance. It is full of helpful information for freelance designers. She has just about covered all the questions I could ever ask. Anything from contracts and project management, to packaging files for development. I’ve just about read every post this past week. If you’re a designer you should definitely check it out. There is always something to learn and it will only help you become better at what you do.

Don’t forget to take some time to slow down for a bit this week. I would love to see what you did. Share it on instagram by tagging it #theslowdownproject. More info in Monday’s post.

Moodboard: Simple & Sophisticated

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Branding, Graphic Design, Inspiration, Moodboards 2202 Views

I decided to start incorporating moodboards into my design process. This is my first one and it has been so helpful and really fun to work with my clients to put together. Who wouldn’t love an excuse to scour Pinterest for work?
This moodboard is for a branding project I’m working on. The final identity will be mostly neutral colors with a few bolder accent colors.
Alright got to run. I’m so excited to get started I can’t wait any longer.

Pantone Pairings

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Color, Design, Food, Inspiration, Pantone 1783 Views

Have you seen these Pantone Pairings by David Schwen? They are so clever. I love it when designers step away from the computer and play with tangible things. I really should challenge myself to do that more often. I’m not sure I could come up with something this good though. I guess I won’t know until I try. As Barney Stinson would say, “challenge accepted.”

In Motion: Typography Overload

Get ready for a truckload of unique, hand-illustrated typography! Artist Leandro Senna created 66 beautiful lyric cards to go along with Bob Dylan’s iconic “Subterranean Homesick Blues” without the aid of a computer. Check out the impressive result:

You can see each card up close and read about Leandro’s process over on his website.

Decorate Your Desktop: 02

I thought it was about time to do another wallpaper design. I won’t always to designs with quotes but this one really speaks to me. I really love it. I think we tend to put a lot of value on keeping busy and filling up every spot on our calendar. Maybe in a way it makes us feel important. I think we have it all backwards. We should savor every moment we have and not keep rushing from one thing to the next.

I challenge you to make some time in your calendar this week to just be quite and relax. Go grab a cup of coffee and just sit. Don’t peek at your phone or check facebook. Just be present wherever you are at. It’s pretty refreshing.

And as a way to keep each other accountable, I would love to see what you did to slow down this week. Post a picture to instagram and tag it with #theslowdownproject. I know, I know, I just said no phones so post it before or after. I think sharing pictures will be a fun way to encourage each other to slow down and maybe even give each other some good ideas.

I’ll share some of them next week here on the blog.
