Finders Keepers: The Fauxmartha
This find is a little different then the usual Finders Keepers posts. Have you ever heard of The Fauxmartha? Melissa is an amazing tallented graphic designer and food enthusiast that just so happens to have the same alma mater as Jake and I! I recognized her profile picture on the Alt Summit facebook group and contacted her right away. How cool is it that we both are graphic designers, bloggers and JBU alumni attending ALT? Small world!
Her blog is filled with great recipes, helpful tips, and scrumptious food photography. You’ve got to go check it out. Let me warn you ahead of time though, it’s probably going to give you the appetite of a bear waking up from a long winter of hibernation. Yep, the food looks that good!
Shop/Social
Yesterday I mentioned how I get together every week with other creative small business owners. Those same women (including myself) are putting together an event called Shop/Social. It will be a fabulous night of tasty treats and finely crafted goods. People can come to socialize and shop. And to add to the fun we are each donating something for a raffle (let me just say I wish I could win these prizes) as well as other activities.
So who’s going to be there?

Every week I get together with three other friends who are also creative small business owners like myself. Each week I walk away more inspired and encouraged than the last. These women are amazing.
A few weeks ago one of them told me this quote from Jon Acuff, “Don’t compare your beginning to someones else’s middle.” Those words really hit home for me. Comparing yourself to others is a dangerous trap that can really leave you frustrated and discouraged. I to easily find myself looking at other blogs or small businesses and wonder how they got to be so successful and then ask myself why I am not where they are. When in reality they have probably been working at it longer and who knows what else they had to do to get where they are. I’m are still at the beginning of my entrepreneur journey. I have a lot of growing and work to do.
So as I prepare to go to ALT Summit in just one week, I thought it would be a helpful reminder to have this quote on my phone (nicely designed of course). So that as I talk to all the amazing, creative people I can remember not to get caught up in comparing myself, but instead enjoy their company and learn what I can from them, because after all they have been at this a lot longer than I have.
I hope this quote is encouraging to you too!

Getting Ready for ALT Summit SLC
I still can’t believe I’m going to ALT and in exactly two weeks! I still have lots to do to get ready for it.
I was chatting with a blogger who is one of the speakers at ALT and she described the conference as Project Runway meets HGTV. At first I kind of panicked and wanted to immediately race out and buy a whole new wardrobe for the conference. I expressed my concerns to a friend and she reminded me that most importantly I just need to be myself. So instead of revamping my entire closet, I decided to just pick up a few new things to jazz up the clothes I already have.
1: This statement necklace added to any outfit should do the trick.
2: Loving stripes lately. The perfect bag to carry around a few necessities.
3: A blazer to instantly dress up any outfit and a little extra warmth for chilly SLC.
Now that I have the Project Runway part down I need to more importantly focus on the real reason I’m attending: to make new friends, learn from the vetrans and show the blogging world what I have to offer. To do that I need to:
1: Re-stock and design new products for our shop.
2: Print more business cards. I’m thinking yellow edge painting would be a nice touch.
3: A fresh moleskine to take lots of notes to share with you when I get back.
Time is ticking. I better get moving.
