Happy Valentine’s day everyone! I’m pretty excited about today. I love having a day dedicated to showing people just how much you love them. Plus it’s probably the only day all year when you can go heart crazy and none cares: heart cards, heart shaped food, hearts, hearts, hearts!
I know I say it a lot, but I can’t say it enough. I love my husband. I am so blessed to be able to call him mine. As crazy as this sounds this is only our second Valentine’s day together as a couple. When we were dating we never once had a Valentine’s together. We were always in different states. Although, our first date was on Valentine’s Day our freshman year of College. We were already good friends at that point, but we didn’t start dating for another year and a half after that.
Tonight we’re going to make a romantic dinner at home. We both prefer it that way. LA restaurants are busy every other day of the year so I can’t image the crowds on Valentine’s day. We’ll make some steak, open a nice bottle of wine and have our own little candle light dinner. How about you, any Valentine’s plans?

Paul McCartney in Hollywood

Jake Blog Post Hollywood, Los Angeles, Photography, The Beatles 1166 Views

Jamie and I were fortunate enough to get a clear view of Sir Paul McCartney receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday afternoon! There were hundreds of people there, and we were a good 75 feet away from the podium. Luckily, Jamie was able to see through the crowd, and I had long enough arms to get my camera above everyone else’s. It was so much fun getting to see and hear him in person! Neil Young was also there to talk a bit before Paul did. What a cool experience.

The head of the Walk of Fame was talking for what seemed like forever before Paul finally got to speak. The crowd was getting pretty tired of it, and Paul played along by making all of those faces.
It was pretty hard to tell what my camera was pointed at because the sun was directly above us. But I just turned on the continuously fire mode on, held the shutter down, and did my best to point it in his direction. I ended up with over 200 pictures, but these were the ones that turned out the best. We can’t tell our future children cool stories of how we saw The Beatles, but at least we can tell them we were there when Paul McCartney got his star.

Beatlemania

The Beatles: Paris, 1964

When it comes to The Beatles, sometimes I feel like I missed out on a huge part of history. They’re the biggest (and best) band of all time! I still enjoy their music today, but just how much more amazing would it have been to see them live or even just experience their music for the first time along with the rest of the world.
Today in Hollywood there is going to be a little bit of Beatlemania going on. Paul McCartney is finally joining the rest of his band members and getting his well deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Jake and I are going down there on his lunch break to see if we can show some homage to Sir McCartney. I missed out on all the other historical events, so I hope I can at least take part in this small one.

Ransom Letters

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Art, Design, Graphic Design, Poster, Typography 1341 Views

I just came across these giclee print letters this morning from Methane Studios. They have designed each letter of the alphabet so you could buy one or a whole bunch and spell out anything you can think of. Since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner I decided to spell love. The O is my favorite.

Now that we finished our new design for our website, we are planing on re-designing all the other things that go along with our identity: letterhead, packaging etc. I’m really excited about this. At the same time designing for yourself is usually the hardest, but as Barney Stinson would say, “Challenge accepted”.

I’ve been looking around the internet for inspiration and I am really loving these clean and simple designs. I mean look at that serif bag. It’s just perfect! I think some people (including myself) tend to over complicate design when in reality sometimes keeping it simple is just better. I’m going to keep this new revelation in mind as I continue to update our identity.

New Website Design!

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Design, News, Website 2524 Views

Drumroll please… As you can see we re-designed our website! It’s has been in the making since the beginning of January. Jake spent numerous nights coding late into the night. You can thank him for the cool fade rollovers on the navigation. That’s probably my favorite part. We are so excited to finally be able to show it off.

It took us a little while to decide on a design we liked, because to be honest we still liked what we already had. But we also knew it was time for an update. After a few tries we finally designed something we loved. Isn’t it a beauty? Go ahead, take a look around and let us know what you think.

And just to remind you, this is our old design.

MuteMath Live

Jake Blog Post Concert, LA, Music 1307 Views

Way back around August or September Jamie and I bought tickets to see MuteMath–one of our favorite bands. She introduced me to them back in college, and had seen them live before. Not only had I never seen them live, I had never really been to a rock concert (crazy, no?).

The show was at Club Nokia in downtown LA. We waited in line an hour before the doors opened and were able to get wristbands that let us up closer to the stage. It was all standing on the ground floor and we were around 5 or 6 rows of people back. For most of the concert, there was a surprising amount of room for comfort. The band played their new album in it’s entirety, as well as an entire album’s worth of older songs; they put on such an energetic show. I had such an amazing time that I didn’t even realize that by the time the concert was over (at 12:20 in the morning), that we had been standing for more than 5 hours! Jamie and I grabbed a couple t-shirts on the way out. What an amazing night!
Here are some of the best pictures I snapped with my phone’s camera. And if you’ve never heard MuteMath before, check them out: http://mutemath.com/

Fresh Basil

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Food, garden, Home, Plants 1229 Views

It seems lately that a lot of the recipes I’ve been making calls for fresh basil. Usually I just substitute it for dried basil; mainly because I can’t justify buying a whole container of fresh basil and then only using a leaf or two while all of the rest just wilts away.
Last night we went grocery shopping and I discovered that right there in the produce they sold basil plants! Now, I know what you’re thinking, “what about that little herb garden you started last summer that ended up killing all the plants?” Yes, that was a disaster, but the main herb I wanted was basil and the lady at the green house wouldn’t sell it to me because she said it doesn’t grow well with the other herbs I bought. Anyway, I think I deserve a second chance, don’t you?

I’m loving how cute it looks in my kitchen window and wow does it smell lovely. I’m planning on using some of the fresh basil in this Tomato-Basil Parmesan Soup recipe tonight for dinner.

I never told you guys, but back in December we got an email from Victoria over at A Subtle Revelry asking us if we would be interested in contributing to one of the upcoming issues of Styled Magazine! She saw what we did for our Hot Chocolate Party and loved it. Of course we will take any excuse to throw a party so we said we would love to.

After brainstorming lots of winter party ideas, we deciding to have a Indoor Winter Picnic. Like always our friends Jake and Erika came over and helped us make and set up everything. Have I mentioned I love those two? I don’t know what I would do without them. I guess not throw as good of parties. We had so much fun. I think roasting s’mores was our favorite part. And if you haven’t tried a dark chocolate strawberry s’more, I would highly suggest stopping whatever you are doing and making one.

Here are a few of the pictures we took of the party. You can see more pictures in the newest issue of Styled Magazine or even more on their blog. We also designed invitations and tags so don’t forget to download those while you are over there.
