Loving Letterpress

Every time Jamie and I have decided to print something on our letterpress up until this point, we’ve been learning something new or working on something that needed both our full attentions to accomplish. That makes it pretty hard to document the process. We’ve wanted to make a video of our printing for a while now, so this past weekend we decided to print a simple one color design that only took one person at a time to print. We were able to take a lot of nice video with our digital camera and put it together in a little video. For those of you who really had no idea what a letterpress was when you found out we got one, hopefully this will be a good visual overview of what we use it for. We hope you love it!

The video was super fun to make. We decided at the beginning to use all natural light coming in from our living room window. I wanted to use our press table and all of our printing supplies as background texture elements as much as possible. We used our 50mm lens for everything except the overhead shot of the press we used our 24mm.
The short little intro at the beginning was also really fun to make. I inserted our logo into that shot digitally. It was a lot of fun for me because I got to simulate the perspective of the camera’s angle, depth of field, and even the lighting. And I even came up with and played the little two chord jingle with the help of my fantastic wife. We felt very accomplished. The clip will be before all of our videos in the future.
Oh, and the recipe card we printed in this video will soon be available in our etsy store.

Finders Keepers: Prehistoric Planters

I discovered these a few days after my friend Erika’s birthday. She’s crazy about dinosaurs so I was a little disappointed I missed out on the perfect occasion to give her one. I think she would have loved these. I know I do.
Plaid Pigeon is constantly selling out of these planters. They are in pretty high demand and it is just run by a husband a wife doing what they love – together. That’s always inspiring to Jake and I. If you want to read more about them, they were interviewed by Etsy. I always enjoy reading about other artists.

Photo of the Week: Fire Hydrant

I currently love yellow, so when I saw this bright yellow fire hydrant I knew it would be the perfect thing to try out the camera on my new phone. I think it turned out pretty good. Don’t worry though I won’t forget how to use my real camera.

Just Because

Yesterday Jake surprised me with a new phone! But not just any phone, the HTC Thunderbolt. The sweetest part is that Jake has really been wanting this phone for a while now, but instead of buying it for himself he got it for me. It was a “just because” present and probably one of the coolest phones I’ve ever seen. I love it. So far I’ve deposited a check, looked at the local Red Box rentals, got a really awesome camera app, and the list goes on. I can even update our blog easily from it. My last phone was not the best. It had a bad touch screen so every time I tried to push a button it ended up being the wrong one. Not anymore! I have the best husband ever.

Morning Brew: Herb Garden

Jamie Bartlett Blog Post Food, garden, Home, Inspiration 1967 Views

Both our parents have gardens. In the following months they will be able to enjoy all kinds of fresh produce. And the worst part is that Jake and I don’t even live near by to help take all the extras off their hands. All this to say that, I wish I had a garden. I would even settle for an herb garden. But I don’t know the first thing about gardening plus I can never seem to remember to water my plants. That’s why I have a cactus. I think i’ll at least give it a try and hope for the best. So if you have any tips or tricks about growing herbs speak now before some poor innocent plants die.

Grain & Gram

Grain and Gram:  The New Gentleman’s Journal couldn’t have a better name. It is definitely a manly man’s domain which is what I love about it. These guys get good and dirty with their work and yet create beautiful pieces. To me things are much more valuable if time, sweat, and a few tears are put into them.

They cover such a wide range of craftsmen; from a butcher, letterpresser and even a custom jean maker. The entire site is so well done. The type treatment, photography and writing make all the vocations look so intriguing. I would be an apprentice for any one of these craftsmen.

Morning Brew: Macarons?

I thought I would bring you some color to brighten your morning. Have you ever had a Macaron? They are so bright and cheery looking, but I have no idea what they taste like. I hear most people can’t get enough of them.

Finders Keepers: Indoor S’More Maker

S’Mores are one of my favorites things, but living in the city dosen’t really allow me to make them very often. Just last week I was craving one, so I settled for a cookie recipe that was similar to S’Mores. They were good, but not quite the real thing. This rack would be perfect for making S’Mores at home. Although, half the fun is being outside by a campfire. I guess I could settle for this and then hope for a backyard in the future.
